Organizations set rules that are vital to ensure stability across all departments but in this post, we are going to focus on Meetings. There is a need for a concrete understanding of the rules of engagement that should be observed during a meeting
Here are some of the major Rules of Engagement that should be observed in a meeting:
Think before speaking
Think about what you want to say first before going ahead to speak about it. It’s okay to disagree but respectfully do this.
Listen with an open mind
The ability to listen without being biased is something that should be learned, a skill that would be very helpful in any meeting. Don’t keep a grudge because you do not agree with the points raised by an individual.
Don’t attack the person, attack the problem
No matter the scenario, don’t attack the person always challenge the idea. Passing blame and pointing fingers would not solve the problem.
Record result and follow up
Documentation of meeting outcomes would come in handy in different scenarios but when you don’t document then there is no evidence that the meeting ever took place.
Be physically and mentally present
Don’t let any non-meeting interactions affect you, pay attention closely. Treat the meeting with absolute respect.
In summary, share and ask questions, keeping quiet in a meeting makes it feels like you are left out. Be Engaged.
